Fire from mortars ceased --
it is said they have been
carried up the river -- more
probable they are out of
ammunition -- We make
reconnoisances along the
whole line and endeavor to

them to the rear -- unable

is nearer the attainment of

weeks ago -- they are however
daily strengthening and en-
larging their works. I wonder
that they have not brought
mortars to bear on our land
front -- "twoud I fear greatly
